Summary of the House Committee Version of the Bill

SJR 19 -- PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION FOR VETERANS' ORGANIZATIONS

SPONSOR: Ridgeway (Jackson)

COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass" by the Committee on Veterans
by a vote of 10 to 0.

This proposed constitutional amendment exempts, upon voter
approval, the property of veterans' organizations from taxation.

FISCAL NOTE: Estimated Effect on General Revenue Fund of an
Income of $0 in FY 2006, a Cost of $38,670 in FY 2007, and an
Income of $0 in FY 2008. No impact on Other State Funds in FY
2006, FY 2007, and FY 2008.

PROPONENTS: Supporters say that this is a simple constitutional
change clarifying that veterans' organizations are tax exempt.
It was thought that they would naturally fall under the umbrella
of charitable organizations, but the bill makes it clear that
veterans' organizations are not to be taxed.

Testifying for the bill were Senator Ridgeway; and Veterans of
Foreign Wars.

OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
